Art books for children…

Daisy and Bobby love the Manchester Art Gallery. We don’t look at every picture, we just let them choose the ones that mean a lot to them. Daisy loves the Ophelia, from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, picture.  Bobby loves the above picture of a lion (supposedly it inspired the Lyle’s Golden Syrup tins). So we sit and discuss what they like about that piece and why, what it makes them feel and think. When they say they’re done we then go to the gift shop and they are allowed to buy one postcard each of their favourite piece from that day.

Inspired by their love for Art I searched for some books which discussed artists and the work they did. I came across these by James Mayhew. The following two Daisy chose as they are her  and Bobby’s favourites. They are written especially for children and have facts at the back. My two really enjoy these books and are being educated on great artists and their work at the same time. We have read them a lot and now Daisy reads them to her dolls in bed. There is a whole series and all are fabulous.

1. Katie and the Starry Night by James Mayhew. This one is about Van Gogh and Katie is out with her Grandma for the day at the art gallery.  It’s a beautiful way to introduce and discuss art with children.

2. Katie and the Waterlily Pond: A Journey Through Five Magical Monet Masterpieces by James Mayhew. This one is about Monet and again a trip with grandma to the art gallery. A good introduction of impressionism for children.

A beautifully illustrated series of books. Take a look.
