Over the last couple of months I have been readdressing all aspects of how we live as a family and have been trying to reduce the amount of waste we produce in our household. I have written about converting to net bags from plastic, to bamboo toothbrushes and also to nontoxic products for washing up. Next up was clingfilm. Cling film (or plastic wrap) is used in so many of our homes as it handily covers food and helps it to stay fresh. Cling film is made from a variety of plastics, however the most popular material is polyvinyl chloride (PVC). As well as being possibly bad for our health, it is a single use product that ends in landfill. As I have written previously here, our beautiful oceans are filling up with these products and it is killing all our splendid wildlife.
On researching what I could use as a replacement I came across these amazing beeswax wraps and they truly are amazing.
They are 100% natural .Compared to cling film Beeswax Wraps are all natural so no nasties will leach into your food whilst it’s being stored.
They keeps your food super fresh. The combination of natural ingredients with the 100% cotton fabric allows the wraps to breathe, making sure our food stays fresher for longer.
They are clingy but in a good way. Pine resin gives the wraps a natural adhesive making sure our food is sealed tight, the warmth from our hands helps mould the wraps to give a strong seal.
They are reusable. Rather than using cling film or foil that you throw away after one use, the wraps can simply be washed in cold water with a little bit of soap and then are ready to use again. After a month or so just pop them in the oven to re pasteurise them and whoop whoop off you go again.
They are biodegradable. Once you have used your wrap to the max you can pop it on your compost!
They are produced by Carly and Fran who source all of the beeswax from their friendly, local beekeeper in the Cotswolds.
We have the large kitchen pack and have used them constantly. In fact I think maybe another pack is in order.
