Being outdoors is very important to us as a family. This has become even more apparent with the current situation. A good proportion of our time is spent in the garden and believe me I have never been so grateful to live where we do or for the hour we are still allowed to take each day for exercise.
We have discovered that what works best for us with homeschooling is definitely completing work set by their teachers in the morning and then having a theme for the afternoon. This has made life a lot easier. Yesterday Bobby chose to have a forest school theme, he is at his happiest in the great outdoors, and so we dug out all our favourite forest school books and had a good look through for some inspiration. I need to add here that it is Daisy and I that have to dip into these, Bobby and daddy are true boy scouts and can come up with endless ideas. We collected sticks, big and small, and we had the best afternoon den making, whittling sticks, making mobiles out of sticks and leaves and making stick men.
Forest school helps children in so many ways and develops many skills. It’s very physical so it encourages children to be active, with lots of activities to develop both fine and gross motor skills. It’s gets them out in the fresh air, learning about nature and seasons and working together to get a job done.
The books I have shared have great ideas for all ages, all levels and all seasons. They have lots of new ideas that we haven’t heard of before.
